Clifton’s Cafeteria

Mom wanted to try Clifton’s again for her anniversary, so I offered to treat them as I had always wanted to go there also. We finally made it AND they were open for general business, and they were busy, so my expectations immediately rose.

Mom & Dad

Somehow in my head, I expected more from a restaurant that has been around 80 years. I could not help but think that in its heyday, it was probably real fab! My grandmother used to work at Webster’s and I remember her starched uniform that was as sharp and befitting as was the service. I was hoping that I might be transported back in time upon entering Clifton’s, but such was not the case

The first thing I found odd was that it was more like a buffet than a cafeteria line. The selection of food was rather small than what I expected, however I found some fried chicken and waffles – which I had never had before – and could not resist trying the macaroni ‘n’ cheese.

Clifton's Cafeteria Food

The food tasted good, but as you can see, the food was not even hot, evidenced by the non-melting butter. Strike one! Strike two was the syrup packets.

Still recovering from my fall three days ago, I was not happy about climbing the stairs while holding my tray of food, but I didn’t have a choice as the main floor tables were all occupied. Even my parents, simply due to their age, did not appreciate the stairs. Out of relief, we chose the first available table, which happened to be behind the live music. I am not a fan of live music, but they were playing xmas music, so I was able to withstand.

On the way out, I asked for a manager to complain and make some suggestions for improvement. Apparently, he wasn’t listening to me, as he invited me back to Clifton’s. One of my suggestions was to make the main floor elderly/handicap accessible only, and that is when I found out there was an elevator. Sorry bud, neither I nor my parents were impressed enough to travel to downtown and pay for parking for cold food.

Clifton’s Cafeteria Culls Catastrophic Review

Clifton's Cafeteria So mom wanted to go to Clifton’s for her birthday dinner and we were all set to go when my sister calls and tells my mom she wants to take her out to lunch for her birthday but the only day she has off is mom’s birthday, Wednesday, December 9, 2015, so we had to postpone one day.

I was glad to have learned of the Clifton’s plans because I had never been there and figured it would be a nice surprise to be able to pay for mom’s and dad’s lunch.

So we drive to downtown only to find out they are close for a private event. We were not the only disappointed patrons; another couple had driven from down – for the second time!

Personally, I think that is crappy public relations, not informing your patrons of closures for private events…strike one…and I haven’t even eaten there yet.
