Iron Man (2008)

Iron ManKOL Rating: KOL Crown KOL Crown

My only knowledge of Iron Man comes from an animated movie at the DVD store, which I tried to watch five times, and fell asleep every time.

Wealthy industrialist Tony Stark (Knightly Delight Robert Downey Jr) builds an armored suit after a life-threatening incident, forces him to have a change of heart – quite literally. He ultimately decides to use his technology to fight against evil.

Downey was fantastic as Tony Stark, the only character that made an impression on me from the animated feature I attempted to watch multiple times. Apparently, he worked out a bit for this movie in which his body has achieved hottie status. I have always like him though, flabby or rock hard, and I am glad to see him being so successful despite his past transgressions in real life. Another hit was Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Tony’s right-hand woman. Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges were okay, but their roles were so secondary, it practically seemed a waste of casting.

I went to see this movie with an emotional hangover, which I think keeps my review based in reality, rather than the fantastic world of superhero movies. I must applaud the message of Iron Man to use technology to assist humanity, rather than to destroy it. Excellent!

I managed to stay awake through the entirety of the movie, waiting most of the time for a shirtless Stark (Downey) to be revealed – in the animated feature he showers – and for the bad guys to get their due. The Iron Man costume was awesome, thought the holes that were cut out of his t-shirts were completely idiotic.
