30 Days of Night (2007)

30 Days of NightKOL Rating: KOL Crown KOL Crown

I finally watched a scary movie…at night…alone…and with the door open! I worked myself up more waiting to start the movie than the movie scared me from the actual viewing. I knew all about this movie from the trailers that were playing last year. I had an interest in seeing the movie, but even then my desire for the horror genre had already waned.

30 days of night occurs at the northernmost point of Alaska and this month there are some new visitors in town.

What prompted me to want to see this movie was the premise, which I found fresh and new…even plausible, as I would not describe the antagonists as vampires, as much as cannibals of some type. Having said that, I must now point out the discrepancies of the movie which subtracted from my movie-viewing experience:

Background lighting was inconsistent with the lack of sunlight in some scenes

Vampires do not die from mortal wounds so these were not vampires. Light burned them, but there was insufficient resources. As the “monsters” appeared to have superhuman strength and speed, I guess guns was an ineffective choice?

Why did “monsters” take grandma and leave the brother and prisoner?

I thought Josh Hartnett was perfectly cast and it was nice to see Ben Foster again.
